The Wightman-Berris Academy
What makes the Wightman-Berris (WB) Academy unique? We ask our current students to share their experiences.
What stood out for you at WB?
1. Size - Wightman-Berris is the largest academy at the faculty of medicine at UofT. We have found that everyone in WB is close with each other with the advantage that you will have the opportunity to mingle with a larger proportion of the class at WB events and academic sessions.
2. Location - The majority of WB’s anchor hospitals such as the UNH network and Mount Saini are all located in walking distance from campus. Even the other hospitals which WB services that are a bit further away such as Bridgepoint and Toronto Western, are all easily accessible with transit; and their unique patient populations definitely make up for the short commute. Honestly, we cannot stress how great it is to have your hospitals in walking distance from campus if you like to live in Toronto/downtown core while studying.
3. Food - WB is the closest academy to campus and naturally, restaurants and food vendors aggregate around universities. When you’re in our academy, it's really hard not to find a nearby cuisine you fancy. We try to be adventurous and have lunch at different places everyday, and we recommend the same!
4. Research - Another perk of having the most diverse hospital network means that WB students will have easier access to an array of research opportunities. All of the hospitals in the WB academy have their own associated research institute which will allow inclined students to seek out opportunities from day one. Furthermore, the unique patient populations served by the various hospitals in WB means that students will not have an issue finding opportunities that are interesting to them.
5. Study space - Another perk of being the academy that serves the most hospitals is the added access to all the unique study places. Each hospital has their own associated libraries and learning rooms which only learners have access to. One of these places that we use is the Helliwell center at TGH. The rooms are open 24/7, can accommodate large groups, and there are clinical exam rooms equipped with all the necessary tools. These sites are very helpful when it comes to practicing clinical skills before OSCE’s with your peers.

How do students feel learning at WB?
My name is Reza and I am a medical student who is part of the Wightman-Berris (WB) academy. I initially ranked WB first in my academy selection for a multitude of reasons which have all been reinforced by my experience here. One of the reasons I chose WB was for the great learning environment. At WB we have access to some of the top hospital sites within the University Health Network (UHN) such as Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and Michael Garron Hospital, as well as Mount Sinai Hospital. These sites are all top-ranked with their own unique strengths, and have allowed me as a learner to see a very diverse patient population and rare cases and presentations. The location of the learning environments is also a huge plus. Having the hospital sites within walking distance is really nice especially when you have weekly 8AM clinical skills sessions. Also, the number of sites we have access to provides us with tons of 24/7 study space access. This has been super helpful when I have needed to study for my exams or practice my clinical skills and having them close to home also makes it much easier to motivate yourself and stay later if its needed. Research opportunities also come plentiful at WB, with countless unique projects going on, if you have an interest, chances are you can find a supervisor that is doing it. WB helped connect me with my current research supervisor based on my interests, and I know several of my colleagues that have also been connected through the academy. WB is also the largest academy. This might scare people as they may feel as though there would be a lack of community. My experience here has been anything but that. Having more students in our academy has allowed me to meet more diverse people and provided me the opportunity to make some lasting friendships. We also have pub nights, Christmas parties and other social gatherings to foster community. Our academy director is also always available for WB students, and I know that I have talked with Dr. Tzanetos on numerous occasions for inquires on career exploration, research opportunities, and more personal matters. For anyone thinking if WB is right for them, I can say that through my experience I would highly recommend WB to all future UofT med students.

The Peters-Boyd Academy
What makes the Peters-Boyd (PB) Academy unique? We ask our current students to share their experiences.
What stood out for you at PB?
- The shuttle! - We understand if anyone has reservations about commuting, but we’ve found that riding the shuttle is a great opportunity to bond with your classmates. It’s also nice to have a little down time carved out of your day for napping, listening to podcasts, or chatting with friends.
- Dr. Piliotis - also affectionately known as Dr. P - is passionate about the wellbeing of PB students! She is always available for a chat and holds events - like barbeques! - throughout the year.
- Fantastic tutors - Our tutors are dedicated to teaching and providing a fun learning environment for students! (Not to mention that they sometimes provide free coffee and food!)
- Green goddess panini - Found exclusively at Harlequin’s Cafeteria in Sunnybrook Hospital. A delicious, greasy, gooey mess of cheese and avocado that is sure to wreck the GI system of anyone who is lactose intolerant.
- Great mix of hospitals with different types of medicine - We have a fantastic mix of medicine across our three hospital sites - Sunnybrook Hospital, North York General Hospital, and Women’s College Hospital: inpatient, ambulatory, community, and academic!
What makes PB special?
If any of the points listed above have not convinced you yet, Sunnybrook Hospital is the busiest and largest trauma centre in Canada.

How do students feel learning at PB?
One Thursday afternoon before CBL, Margaret, the education coordinator at Sunnybrook, popped her head into the student lounge to tell us that there was free food left over from another event for us to take. During CBL, my group and our tutor ate a cake that we had baked to celebrate our last session together. On the shuttle ride back downtown, we passed around a giant box of timbits that one of our classmates had bought to share. Ultimately, the fact that Peters-Boyd is a smaller academy makes a noticeable difference in how easily you can forge friendships and how tight-knit our cohort feels. We definitely feel supported by our tutors, our education coordinators, and Dr. P.

The FitzGerald Academy
What makes the FitzGerald (Fitz) Academy unique? We ask our current students to share their experiences.
What stood out for you at Fitz?
- Fitzgerald is a small academy (~50 students per year), allowing students to get to know each other well and feel supported by their fellow students and team.
- Students in Fitz learn at both St. Michael’s and St. Joseph's hospitals. St. Michael’s is a Level 1 Trauma Centre and provides tertiary and quaternary care in areas such as cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, inner city health, and therapeutic endoscopy. It employs excellent clinicians and offers learning opportunities for students in a huge variety of specialties.
- St. Joseph’s Healthcare Centre is our academy’s second hospital site. This hospital site offers students the opportunity to learn from physicians in a community hospital setting right from first year, allowing students to experience a different patient population and broaden their learning opportunities.
- St. Michael’s is home to the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre. Excellent researchers, educators, and clinicians at these institutions create and mobilize health care knowledge and offer unique learning opportunities for students.
- Having most of small-group sessions taking place at Li Ka Shing means that we are centrally located, but still a nice walk away from the main campus which gives us a break in the day to walk outdoors with our friends and stop for food along the way!
What makes Fitz special?
Fitz offers the perfect balance of a tight knit community of students, while also being centrally located at St. Michael’s Hospital/Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre. Our community hospital site at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Centre is also accessible via TTC. Between our two hospitals, students are able to experience so many aspects of medicine, such as transplant, trauma, community care--the list goes on!

How do students feel learning at Fitz?
Fitz is such an amazing and supportive community to be a part of! It’s so great to be able to see a smaller subset of our classmates on a regular basis and to form close friendships with them. Since most of our CBL and other small group sessions take place at Li Ka Shing, we are able to walk to nearby coffee shops to study with friends or try new restaurants between classes. There are some amazing extra-curricular aspects of being a Fitzie, such as our annual Christmas Party and talent show! Through our “Fitz Fam” mentorship program, a small group of first year Fitz students are matched to a pair of second year Fitzies, which provides an opportunity to learn from our more senior colleagues and to develop friendships with them. Our leadership staff is extremely welcoming and approachable, and their friendly faces are seen on a daily basis at Li Ka Shing. The friends we made in Fitz will be our confidants and support systems through clerkship and beyond. We are grateful for the lifelong friends we met in this academy who have made medical school an amazing experience!

The MAM Academy
What makes the Mississauga Academy of Medicine (MAM) unique? We ask our current students to share their experiences.
What stood out for you at MAM?
- MAMily - small and close-knit academy.
- MAM faculty and staff are stellar, they go above and beyond to support us.
- 24/7 access to HSC and its amenities (e.g. study spaces, lounge, patio).
- Being situated in nature allows you to relax and get away from the city.
- Having access to extracurriculars and services in both Mississauga and Toronto (e.g. clubs, networking events, gym access).
What makes MAM special?
Having our classes and rotations at the THP community hospitals, which have fewer medical learners, allows us to have a more hands-on and individualized learning experience. We are able to work one-on-one with preceptors and see a wide range of patients with a variety of healthcare needs in the community, while still being able to participate in downtown hospital experiences!

How do students feel learning at MAM?
With 56 students, you instantly become familiar with everyone early in your medical school career. And whether you are best friends or not, there is a significant sense of comfort, comradery, and sense of community that comes with having familiar faces. I have found that my academy mates are all extremely grounded and mature individuals who motivate me to work hard and excel in my academic and extracurricular activities. Moreover, MAM is really an academy that focuses on your learning, whether it is the tutors who facilitate your small group sessions or during clerkship there is a focus on giving you as many opportunities as possible to learn and hone your skill to the best of your ability. This is especially true due to the fantastic teacher to learner ratio; we have the most hands on opportunities to build the basis of our medical training. The MAM office administration are also amazing individuals who always have a smile on their face and kind words, and are so extremely accessible to us. They are always on our side and so willing to help, which makes navigating bureaucratic hurdles that much easier. Being at MAM is like having the best of both worlds, access to opportunities downtown Toronto as well as at Trillium Health Partners.
