Top places to visit in Toronto – U of T Winter 2019 Edition
Torontonians (yes, that’s what we are called) know how to make the best out of every season. Toronto is known for its wealth of seasonal activities that make it truly a winter wonderland. So grab a coffee from your favourite local shop, put on your cozy jacket and have a look at some of the best attractions this wintertime has to offer in the city.
Skating at the Natrel Rink (Habourfront)/Nathan Phillips Square
There is no better way to warm up (and nothing more Canadian) than to take a leisurely skate at these two beautiful skating rinks. Nathan Phillips Square is nestled in between our current City Hall and the Old City Hall.The iconic “Toronto” sign is rinkside. The Natrel Rink is located at Harbourfront, right next to Lake Ontario, and is known as the most scenic rink in the city. Both locations offer spectacular lights at night with nearby comfort foods and music to skate along. Did we mention that access is free for both these rinks? For a fee, skate rentals are available.

Light Shows and Festivals
Calvacade of Lights: The Cavalcade of Lights is one of the largest light shows in Toronto and will also mark the official start to the holiday season for the city. Featuring the first lighting of Toronto’s 50-foot (15-metre) Christmas tree, you can expect live musical performances, circus arts, a skating party and even fireworks! The event will take place on November 30, 2019 at the Nathans Phillips Square from 7PM - 10:30PM.
Aurora Winter Festival: Inspired by the northern lights, Ontario place is transformed into a magical wonderland with a Christmas market, amusement rides, skating rink and food pavillions. Did we mention they also have a tube park and impressive light displays based on different mythical worlds? Open until January 5, 2020.
Toronto Christmas Market: Need we say more? This holiday market continuously attracts new and returning visitors with its displays, vendors, carolers and boutiques at the historical Distillery District. The popular heart-shaped "statue" is back for your favourite instagramable moments and selfies. Did we also mention that admission is free on weekedays until 6PM Friday? Open until December 22nd (Distillery District boutiques are open year-round).
Goodies and Foodies
One of a Kind Show: The evergrowing One of a Kind show features crafts, food and art from over hundreds of vendors. It is a great way to find little gems and intricate gifts while supporting our local artisans. Expect a lot of maple syrup and jam goodies! Open until December 1st.
Winterlicious 2020: If you love exploring different flavours in Toronto and want to refine your palette, do not miss out on this annual event. Toronto is known to be one of the world's most diverse cities regarding international and ethnic cuisines. Restaurants all around the city will celebrate our diverse food culture by offering a glimpse of their high-end tasting menus for a reasonable set price. Pro tip: remember to make a reservation for places you'd like to try as most become fully booked earlier than expected. Winterlicious will run from Jan 31st - Feb 13th 2020. Pro tip 2: Keep a lookout for Summerlicious 2020 if you've missed some of the restaurants you wanted to try this season!
