U of T MD Program Fall 2023 Open House

Join our current Temerty Faculty of Medicine medical students who will be hosting the 2023  Fall Open House for the MD program virtually on November 19, 2023 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm ET. 

This event offers informative sessions where you can learn about the MD program at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine from current learners, faculty, and staff. There will also be interactive panels and conversations about important topics like wellness in medicine. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to network with current medical students to gain insights and meet others who share similar interests.

Opening Keynote Speaker: Dr. Richard Wells, MD, D.Phil, FRCPC

Richard Wells attended medical school at Memorial University of Newfoundland and then did a doctorate in molecular genetics in Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale, he returned to clinical training, completing residencies in internal medicine and haematology at the University of Toronto. After a final postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, he joined the faculty of medicine at U of T in 2000. In 2020, after a rather undistinguished career in haematology, he was appointed to his current position as Regional Coroner for Toronto West, a job that he says is OK, but a bit dead. He continues to serve as a lecturer at the U of T medical school, which is a demonstration of the great power of family connections – his wife oversees the first-year medical curriculum. In his spare time, he enjoys hobbies and activities.

MD Curriculum Overview: Dr. Robert Goldberg MD MScCH FRCPC 

Robert completed his medical degree (2010), Internal Medicine (2013) and Endocrinology residency (2015) and Masters degree (Health Practitioner Teacher Education) at the University of Toronto. He is an Endocrinologist at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, ON. He is an Assistant Professor, Division of Endocrinology, University of Toronto where he is actively involved in medical education. In addition to his role as course director for the Concepts, Patients, and Communities 1 Course (CPC-1) in the Foundations Program at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, he is also the Faculty Development Lead at the Mississauga Academy of Medicine (MAM); and is actively involved in small and large group medical student teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Robert is a member of the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (CSEM) Continuing Professional Development Committee and sits as a CSEM Council Director. 

Closing Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ariel Lefkowitz CM MD MEd FRCPC

Ariel Lefkowitz graduated from McGill University medical school in 2013 before moving to Toronto to complete an Internal Medicine residency. He was chief medical resident at Mount Sinai Hospital for a year before completing a fellowship in General Internal Medicine. He obtained his Masters of Education at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Technology (OISE) while completing a research fellowship at the Wilson Centre. He is an Internal Medicine physician and the Education Lead for the Division of General Internal Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, where he gives lectures on many topics including Communication, Moral Courage, Professional Boundaries, and Managing the Self. His scholarly interests include ethics, equity, narrative medicine, and involving patients in medical education.

Black Medical Student Association Overview: Bethel Samson and Cheikh Tchouambou, BMSA Co-Presidents

In this session you will learn more about the Black Medical Student Association (BMSA) and its mission. Hear from Bethel Sampson and Cheikh Tchouambou, the co-presidents of BMSA, as they provide an overview of the organization's goals, initiatives, and the impact it has on the medical community at Temerty Medicine.

MD Admissions Overview: Attendees will also hear from Twanna Lewis, Assistant Registrar, Recruitment and Inclusive Programming about admission requirements for the MD program at Temerty Medicine .

Student Panelists:  Jane Jomy (2T6), Viki Tellios (2T6) and Joshua Andrusiak (2T7).
