Shakil Popatia (Daffydil Representative)
Shakil, known as Shak, is a second-year medical student at the University of Toronto. Coming into medical school, he feared leaving behind the arts, which have always been central to his identity. Through DAFFY, UofT's student-run musical, he discovered a community that shares his passion for creativity. What began as joining the cast evolved into co-directing the show and co-leading the club, where he now helps new students find their place in the same supportive community that shaped his first year.
For Shak, DAFFY is about building something together, celebrating talents, and creating lasting friendships. This spirit of community has extended to his other experiences at UofT, including directing the Admissions Video and coordinating Orientation Week for over three hundred students. These opportunities reinforced his belief that medicine thrives on connection and mutual support.
Shak is proud of leaning into the arts and leadership, as they have given him balance, belonging, and purpose. He is excited to continue building spaces where students feel supported and connected—what makes UofT feel like home.
